REALITY OR STAGED? 

Four years of dealing with contests and competitions have educated me in  more ways than I expected and I am going to share with you, the good, the bad and the ugly!~DebSherr

The GOOD

The Miss America Pageant has come a long way since I was a girl.  One can only respect the changes in the pageant over the years.  No longer a song & dance stroll down the runway in a one piece bathing suit and glitzy gown!  You've got to be one tough cookie to compete in todays Miss America Pageant.  A lady also has to have won the state title as in the case of Miss Florida 2008 the lovely Miss Sierra Minott. 

 These young lady's compete for the title in the hopes of winning scholarships.  By any means, this is a good thing although some might say it's unfair to those who are not born beautriful.  Beauty on the outside is no longer a main factor.  In todays pageants, inner beauty counts the most. 

Miss Florida went on to win as a runner up in the Miss America Pageant in January (broadcast weekly as 'COUNTDOWN TO THE CROWN' on channel TLC, check out their website and watch videos of the competitions.)

  These young lady's were all amazing but only the very best took home the five scholarship prizes.  In my opinion, Miss America has com a very long way and those ways are all good.  Definately on the 'up and up'.

 THE BAD:

 If you watch television at all then chances are you have seen the ads where dairy cows are each given a chance to tell us why THEY should be the next California HAPPY COW, in a contest that not only mocks the genuine pageants but also their contestants. 

 When I first went to the URL to vote for the next HAPPY COW, (several months ago) what I found was a search engine that contained the names of the cow contestants shown on television in the commercials, not a contest.  Now, there is a website with all the poor pathetic cows pitching their reasons that they should be the next HAPPY COW. 

 I voted for Keirsten but I have to wonder if she hasn't been milked dry and butchered by now.  I find this contest in poor taste.  I'm going to give you the link so you can see for yourself but keep in mind that what you are truly looking at is nothing more than an entertaining way to push dairy products by playing on our heart strings.  What makes me so angry is that as a woman, one who remembers that beauty pageants are often refered to as 'CATTLE CALLS', I take it personal!  It's one thing to decieve in order to sell but using cows as female contestants is plain old insult to injury. You be the judge!

THE UGLY:

As if there weren't already enough bands on the planet, there is one yearly competition that shall remain nameless but I will fill you in on their some what scam!  Each year, hundreds of local bands from around the USA spend thousands of dollars trying to win a 'BATTLE OF THE BANDS' in this competition. 

 Here is how it goes; Each band pays a standard fee of more than $300.00 just to enter. The LURE is that bands who would otherwise not get into some of the more popular New York City clubs, get to compete with other bands IN THESE CLUBS.  The Bitter End is one of them and you can find videos of a band called LIQUID JONES (great band out of Philly) on www.youtube.com/DebSherr  who competed several years ago and almost made it to first place, anyway, the better the band the more money they spend to continue to compete for a chance to go to Germany and record a cd.

 Here's the truly UGLY part; The best band doesn't always win.  This is because the program manipulates the contest so that it's judged by 'A SHOW OF HANDS'!  So these poor bands go out there and have to promote the competition and some bands rent school buses to carry their FANS (for hands, ofcorse) and each time a band goes on to the next round, they must continue to bus in their fans who naturally are going to be spending money in the clubs, like ticket costs and alcohol, I think you're smart enough to get the picture. In conclusion it's easy to see that any NYC band in the competition might have the 'upper hand' based on less expense for travel and easier for fans to show up at their gig.

Still, these weary musicians continue to bite for a chance to do something that in todays music industry can be done without traveling & unfair expenses to them & their fans.  Any band can cut an original CD for less money than the cost of this questionable competition, and upload their mp3's to www.TUNECORE.com  where they will not be charged by this major website which will promote them and sell their mp3's through websites like www.mp3.com , www.ITUNES.com and all the other giant websites out there selling mp3's. 

 However, while www.TUNECORE.com doesn't charge for this service, the websites your mp3's are being sold on, do charge a small fee but you keep your copyrights and so on.  Think of it this way, possibly spend thousands of dollars, time & energy on a NYC CLUBS CONTEST or make money and get somewhere in the world of music by spending a small amount of doe on recordng time to get a sellable quality cd.  That way, you have nothing to lose! 

 If you know how to play the game and you can write hit songs, you won't need 'a show of hands', only the hands of thousands, maybe millions of people downloading your music for pocket change off the internet.  Their pocket change can add up to mega bucks for the band and get you out there!  Then the only traveling you do is when you go on tour and the clubs pay you!
